We love a good protective style. They cut down on styling time, look great on any type of hair, and can help us reach growth goals. But what we don’t always love is the time and expense that comes with it, which is why we try to keep our protective styles as long lasting as possible. Here are a few styles that last the longest and tips to keep them going even longer.
Long-lasting protective styles
Box braids
Simple, gorgeous, and easy to maintain, there’s a reason box braids are one of the most popular styles. Because they’re not attached directly to the scalp, box braids don’t need to be redone as frequently.
Mini twists
Some may think of mini twists as just a necessary step to a gorgeous twist-out, but we think they’re great all on their own. They’re low-maintenance and versatile, and yes, look awesome when unraveled.
Faux locs
There are many different ways to make faux locs, but our favorite is wrapping extensions around loose braids. This gives the style an easy vibe that’s easy to care for, too.
Tips to keep your style going strong
Cleanse and hydrate
While protective styles can drastically cut down your hair routine, they still need a little love to keep them looking and feeling great. Choose products made for natural hair, and always wash and treat as gently as possible.
Keep it covered
The wind, sun, and rain can all damage hair, so keep it covered with head scarves or wraps when you’re out and about.
Get silky
Regular pillowcases can tug or pull hair, so treat yourself to a silk pillowcase or wrap up your hair in a silk headscarf before bed. Practical and luxurious.
Know when to call it
Even the best things in life must end, and there’s a time and place to take out that protective style. If your hair is looking more and more frizzy or unraveling, your scalp is aching or itching constantly, or it’s been two months or more, it’s time to call it.
