Almost everyone gets scalp buildup at some point, especially those of us who love to experiment with hair care. Luckily, it’s usually easy to handle. Here we’re giving our top tips to remove scalp build up from Black hair and get your 4a, 4b, or 4c coils looking and feeling as good as you do.
What causes scalp buildup?
Scalp buildup comes down to two factors: products in our hair care and our scalp’s natural sebum production. With curls and coils, we tend to put a lot of nourishing ingredients in our hair. But our conditioners, leave-ins, treatments, and gels can all start building up on our scalp.
Now add that to our wash schedule. While all hair is unique, thick strands tend to do better with fewer washes, so we’re not frequently stripping out the natural oils our curls and coils crave. While this is great for our strands, going a long time between washes can lead to sebum building up on the scalp, especially in hot and humid weather.
How to deal with scalp buildup
Start with a clarifying cleanse
When looking for a shampoo, go for a lightweight shampoo crafted for type 4 hair, like our Golden Milk Hydrating Shampoo, which is designed to gently clean hair and scalp without stripping natural oils. Then opt for a scalp-friendly conditioner like our Blue Ginger Intensive Recovery Mask to promote hydrated hair and a healthy scalp.
Refresh your scalp between washes
1-4 times a day, put 1-2 drops of Cooling Scalp Serum directly onto your scalp and gently rub into your skin. This will help relieve dryness and itch* and leave your scalp feeling refreshed and revitalized.
